Startupathon: 24-hour podcast to raise funds for women entrepreneurs
In celebration of Portland Startup Week running April 2 through April 6, 2018, Startup Radio Network is hosting the first ever 24 hour live nonstop startupathon where over 100 local Portland, Oregon startup founders and entrepreneurs will be sharing their personal stories of incredible success, abject failure and overall Portlandness. This event is being held in the heart of beautiful downtown Portland, as over 100 entrepreneurs share their business acumen with listeners from around the world.

In the Portland spirit of collaboration, connection and vision for a better world, we will use this 24 hour event as a platform to raise $5,000 for female entrepreneurs in developing countries around the world. The funds we raise will be distributed 100% transparently through microfinance platform, Kiva, where the starting count is 7,257 entrepreneurs, 98% of which are women in developing countries.

Starting 10:00am pacific time on Monday April 2nd and running until 10:00am Tuesday April 3rd, hosts Amelia Pape (founder of My Street Grocery, acquired by Whole Foods, and Principal, ALICE Impact), Sara Batterby (Principal, The Batterby Group) and Mark Grimes (co-founder Startup Radio Network) will do their best to entertain you as they lose their collective minds from lack of sleep. This is not a Guinness Book of World Records attempt for longest podcast at 24 hours live broadcasting; however, this just may be the train wreck you've been waiting to hear. Startup is messy, unpredictable, sleep-depriving and full of inspiring characters...just like this podcast.

Tune-in and listen live at startupradionetwork.com and let the wild rumpus begin. Have questions during the show? Use #startupradionetwork on Twitter, Instagram, or wherever hashtags are sold.

Want to be on the show? There are still some early morning slots available.

Immersive Startups: A conversation with AR/VR founders
Limited Capacity seats available

Immersive technology like augmented and virtual reality is creating a rapidly growing new industry. A report from Tech Trends’ Editor-in-chief, Alice Bonsaio cites this fast growing sector estimated to be $162B by 2020! Far beyond gaming and entertainment, there is potential for this technology to disrupt everything from healthcare and architecture to changing the way we maintain global supply chain. Join us for an engaging evening of conversation with early startup founders and those that support them, as we explore the experience of being on the ground floor of this new immersive reality.

The evening will start with a presentation from Russell Ladson, the Founder of Drop, a ViveX company. Russell will then be joined by two to three other local startup founders in the immersive tech space. We will have a candid conversation about their experiences as founders in the new field, the current state of this technology and where it is headed, along with Q&A from the audience. It will be an insightful and engaging panel.

Russell Ladson is the CEO of Drop Software Inc. (“Drop”)
At Drop, he leads a team of designers, human-computer interaction researchers, and engineers who are obsessed with the way people will search, interact, and discover information in immersive computing environments e.g. virtual and augmented reality. Today, Drop provides an immersive internet searching and browsing experience designed for virtual reality. Drop is venture backed by HTC, one of the world’s leading smartphone makers, MACRO Ventures, Autochrome Ventures, Backstage Capital, and Matter Ventures.

After a close call with mortality in a near fatal accident, he finally understood the sanctity of life and doing what one loves so he co-founded Drop. He spent his postgraduate years as an investment banking analyst at two leading Wall Street firms - Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Rice Financial Products Company. Most of his free time is spent hiking, practicing vinyasa yoga, or playing chess. He graduated from Morehouse College with a B.A. in Economics.

Document Yourself: Practical Tips for a Low(er)-Stress Portfolio
If you need help setting up a writing portfolio, this Meetup is for you!

Erin Grace has agreed to preview her talk for the Write the Docs Conference in May. Here's her abstract:

***********************
In a tech writer’s career, creating and maintaining a great portfolio is as important as it is stressful. What belongs in there? What constitutes your "best work"? What if all your work is proprietary? Do you really need a portfolio if you have a great job?

Building a portfolio is an exercise in documenting yourself: your writing, your skill, your journey as a professional. Like any other kind of documentation, it isn't easy or intuitive to create something great. And like any other kind of documentation, it's worth doing the hard work to get it right.

In this talk, I cover:

* Why you need a portfolio even if you have a stable job
* How to create a well-rounded portfolio and decide what's your best work
* Strategies for adding proprietary work (legally!)
* Options to present it that aren't just a series of email attachments

***********************

Important to know:
Please familiarize yourself with Write The Docs' Code of Conduct, as it applies to this Write The Docs PDX.

http://www.writethedocs.org/code-of-conduct/

***********************

We need additional sponsors. Without them, food and beverages will be limited at this and future meetups. Please contact Mo Nishiyama if your company is interested in sponsoring our meetup.

If you are interested in co-organizing future Write The Docs PDX meetups, please email Mo--the more organizers, the better!

PADNUG: OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect in plain English!
If you're like me, you've heard about OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect, but have a lot of unanswered questions. What's the big deal, anyway? Why do we need yet another set of standards for authentication on the web?

In this talk, I'll break down the rationale behind OAuth and OpenID Connect in plain language, and explain when and how you should use these standards in your applications. I'll cover grant types, flows, scopes, tokens, and more. If you've ever felt confused about how these standards work, this talk is for you!

Whole People: Business and Personal Lives in Harmony
There is no reason to sacrifice one part of your life for another! Life is not a zero-sum game and it shouldn’t make you feel like you can’t “have it all”—because you definitely can. This session is for folks who want to explore options, discuss the paths they have taken to achieve harmony, or learn how to influence their companies and communities to prioritize whole people development.

As the Community Manager for Zebras Unite, which is dedicated to a holistic, sustainable approach to business, the founder and CEO of a benefit corporation that develops high-end storytelling materials for social impact companies, a single mom to a very active 3-year-old daughter, and a community activist, I feel that I have a pretty unique take on “having it all” and what it really takes to support (and be supported by) people hoping to achieve work/life harmony. It’s more than “possible”—it’s going to be a key feature in the very foundation of the future. I’ve coached and trained people in professional settings on this, and I’ve talked it out in casual settings, and there’s no question that this will be valuable to folks in the startup world.

Reverse Pitch: Where The Investors Pitch You
Limited Capacity seats available

We flip around the typical roles, asking some of Portland's leading funders to make the kind of elevator pitch they're typically on the other end of. Each investor will get five minutes and up to five slides to win over attendees. Following the last pitch the investors will have a panel discussion to help founders put their best foot forward.

We are excited to have special guest Arlan Hamilton participating, founder and managing partner of Backstage Capital. Her emergence on the venture capital stage has been chronicled in Fortune, Fast Company, Inc and Tech Crunch. Her firm has made over 80 investments in early stage companies in the last two years (including a handful of PDX firms).

Other pitchers include;

Jon Maroney - Oregon Venture Fund

Terry St. Marie - angel investor

Dr. Robin Klemm - Xxcelerate Fund

The panel discussion will be moderate by Luke Kanies, founder of Puppet.

Commercial Cooperatives: Small Business Growth & Success through Property Ownership Opportunities
The panel will explore commercial cooperatives as a property ownership option for small businesses.  Panelists, including a brewer, guitar store, and tech toy store, will share their experiences as commercial renters and the impact property ownership has on business growth. Also included is a real estate attorney to address logistics of property collectives. Commercial cooperatives are an extension of 'placemaking theory', which holds that collaboratively, people can shape the public realm. Commercial cooperatives are a medium for small businesses to collectively purchase the building where they operate.

Get Out and Talk to People
This event will have three talks (about 20 minutes each) on getting to know your current or potential customers from different methods startups can use to do research about their customers/users, how to make the best of your time interviewing customers/users, and how low-fidelity prototyping can save time and reduce risk.

RSVP: https://nvite.com/pdxstartupweek/8q822x

The Talks

Cromulent Research Methods
The Simpsons has been on TV for almost 30 years, longer than most of us have been working, or even alive! They have been continuously ahead of their time as it relates to UX, by way of poking fun of it by doing things oh-so-wrong. This talk will provide an overview of research methods you can use with advice on what to do, and what not to do.

Discover lessons The Simpsons have taught us about the dangers of bad design, bad UX methods, and why you shouldn't stand in the way of a t-shirt cannon.

Asking without Leading: A crash course in facilitating design research
So you have a product concept, or even a prototype, and you’re ready to get feedback on it. Great! Now what?

When you want real, honest feedback about your design, you need to make sure you are not biasing that effort in ways you don’t even realize. As any good lawyer knows, you can construct tasks and ask questions that subtly (or not so subtly) encourage a particular response, and skew the results. Even if you’re trying to be unbiased, you can get so immersed in your own concepts and language that it’s easy to lose sight of of that and start leading.

This talk provides a crash course in how to minimize bias when collecting feedback on your design. We’ll cover how to establish a good context, ask questions without leading, and respond in ways that encourage your users to give their honest opinions.

Crufty Wunderkind: Paper prototyping that saves money and makes you more right.
We’ve all seen clean, polished and pixel-perfect images of coming soon features and designs. The glitzy shots and screens are meant to sell a fully fleshed out and near ready to ship design. Well, what about the designs before they got so pretty?

Even the world’s finest diamonds started out looking like a lump of coal. This is the same for assumptions about user needs. How to you avoid spending time on something before you know it’s viable and is what your users need?

Enter “Presumptive Prototyping”. These crufty artifacts are quick to conceptualize, cheap to build and fun to demo with users. By understanding how to target your research effort using simple arts & crafts, you can unlock hidden gems of innovation without breaking the bank.

This event is presented by The Portland Human-centered Discipline Collective.

PDXHCD is building a well-connected, human-centered community in Portland. We bring together industry experts, academia, and local organizations to learn the why, what, and how of design thinking and how it can benefit our community and the city at large. We are a collective of experts and event leaders in the field.

Special thanks to Jama for hosting us!

Building Reusable re-frame Components w/ Ryan Neufeld
Much has been said about building re-frame applications in the small, but how well do these same techniques perform building large applications? In practice, our team found traditional approaches to events and state management led to highly-coupled code that was difficult to maintain and test.

In this talk we'll explore why this happens and some simple techniques you can use to create more re-usable re-frame code without boilerplate or any 3rd party libraries.

Portland Data Science Group
SPEAKER:
Ernest Bonat, Ph.D.,
Senior Software Engineer | Senior Data Scientist

ABSTRACT:
Many Python programmers say that procedural programming is the right “Pythonic” way to write Python code. Are they right? What about real Object-Oriented Programming for real production-enterprise application development and deployment?
Here are the main Python programming issues found in Google:
1. Top-Down programming style – general apply to procedures programming
2. Hardcode numerical and string parameter and hyperparameter values
3. No error handling implementation
4. No Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) development
5. No unit-test anywhere
6. No developer and user documentation
and much more.
Ernest will provide a good programming comparison between procedural programming vs object-oriented programming. We would like to have a very serious and open discussion about this important topic. Come and bring your ideas, we would like to listen to you and learn from your experiences.

Worse, yet, if it's your job to supply HR with "the list," how do you feel about this?

What techniques have we found to help HR understand why stack ranking negatively impacts productivity? And didn't the guy who started this all have something to say about that? Thanks, Jack.
